A self-contained bread bowl filled with creamy, spicy buffalo chicken dip, perfect for game day or any gathering. The bread bowl is toasted to prevent sogginess and is completely edible, eliminating the need for extra dippers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round sourdough bread loaf (about 1.5 pounds)
  • 2 cups cooked, shredded chicken
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup buffalo wing sauce
  • 1/2 cup ranch dressing
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese (optional)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Fresh chives or green onions, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
  2. Using a sharp serrated bread knife, cut a circle about 2 inches from the edge of the top of the bread loaf. Remove the top piece and set it aside as the lid. Gently pull out the soft bread from the inside, leaving a shell about 1 inch thick all around. Reserve the removed bread pieces for dipping.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, garlic powder, and onion powder. Brush the inside of the bread bowl and the cut side of the lid with the butter mixture. Place the bread bowl and lid on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake the bread bowl and lid for 8-10 minutes, until lightly golden and crispy. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.
  5. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, buffalo wing sauce, and ranch dressing. Mix until smooth. Fold in the shredded chicken, shredded cheddar cheese, and crumbled blue cheese (if using). Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Spoon the buffalo chicken mixture into the toasted bread bowl, packing it gently. Spread evenly.
  7. Place the filled bread bowl back on the baking sheet. Place the buttered lid on top, slightly offset. Bake for 18-22 minutes, until the filling is hot and bubbly and the cheese is melted. If the top browns too quickly, tent with aluminum foil for the last 5 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh chives or green onions. Serve immediately with reserved bread pieces and extra chips or crackers if desired.

Notes

To prevent a soggy bread bowl, toast the hollowed-out bread bowl before adding the filling. Use full-fat cream cheese and real cheddar for best results. The filling can be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator.
