Best Easy 5-Minute Microwave Mug Mac and Cheese Recipe

microwave mug mac and cheese - featured image

A quick and creamy single-serving mac and cheese made entirely in a microwave mug in about 5 minutes. No pots, no colander, just cheesy comfort in a mug.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/3 cup (about 60 g) elbow macaroni
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) water
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) whole milk
  • 1/4 cup (about 25 g) shredded cheddar cheese, tightly packed
  • 1 tablespoon (14 g) unsalted butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • A tiny pinch paprika (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add the pasta and water to a microwave-safe mug (at least 12 oz). Make sure the water covers the pasta and the mug is no more than half full.
  2. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir.
  3. Microwave for another 1 minute. The pasta should be mostly tender but still al dente. If needed, add 30 seconds for lower-wattage microwaves.
  4. Carefully drain any remaining water over the sink, using a fork to hold back the pasta.
  5. Add the butter and stir until melted.
  6. Add the milk, salt, garlic powder, and paprika. Stir to combine.
  7. Add the shredded cheddar and stir vigorously until melted and smooth. If too thick, add another teaspoon of milk.
  8. Optional: Microwave for 15-20 seconds for extra heat.
  9. Let rest for 1 minute before serving. The sauce will thicken as it cools.

Notes

Use a 12 oz mug minimum to prevent overflow. Stir between intervals for even cooking. Freshly shredded cheese melts smoother than pre-shredded. Add milk after cooking to prevent curdling. Let rest for 1 minute for best texture.
