A simple, crowd-pleasing apple crisp featuring tart apples, a buttery oat crumble, and a rich salted caramel sauce created during baking. This dessert is easy to make with pantry staples and delivers gourmet flavor without the fuss.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 67 medium apples (firm varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened or cold for grating
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1.5 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract. Let sit for 5 minutes to draw out moisture.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt. Grate cold butter into the dry mixture (or rub with fingers) until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Spread the spiced apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples and press down lightly.
  6. Bake for 45-50 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling vigorously.
  7. Cool for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow juices to thicken.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend and certified gluten-free oats. For a vegan version, substitute butter with plant-based sticks. If apples are very juicy, add a tablespoon of cornstarch to the apple mixture. The topping may soften if stored; reheat in the oven to restore crunch.
