A fun and easy Halloween appetizer featuring cocktail franks wrapped in flaky puff pastry with a cream cheese and cheddar filling, designed to look like spooky mummies without sliding off.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed but cold
  • 12–15 cocktail franks or mini hot dogs
  • 2 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • 1 large egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • Poppy seeds or sesame seeds (for eyes)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Unroll puff pastry onto a lightly floured surface and slice into 12 equal strips (approx. 1 inch wide).
  3. Pat cocktail franks dry with a paper towel to ensure crispiness.
  4. Spread a thin layer of softened cream cheese and a small smear of mustard down the center of each pastry strip.
  5. Place a frank at one end of the strip and roll it up tightly, using the cream cheese to seal the pastry.
  6. Gently twist the ends of the pastry strip in opposite directions to create a ‘bandage’ look.
  7. Place wrapped franks on the baking sheet, seam side down, leaving 1 inch between each.
  8. Brush the tops generously with the egg wash.
  9. Place two poppy seeds or sesame seeds near the top of each frank to form eyes.
  10. Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  11. Let cool on the pan for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Keep the puff pastry cold to ensure it puffs properly. Do not overcrowd the baking sheet. Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and burning. For a gluten-free option, use certified gluten-free puff pastry. These are best served warm within 30 minutes of baking.
