A cozy, effortless autumn sangria that combines dry white wine, fresh apples, and warm spices. Perfect for Friendsgiving or any gathering, this drink is easy to prep ahead and improves with time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750ml) dry white wine (such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, or Albariño)
  • 1 cup apple cider (fresh-pressed or high-quality concentrate)
  • ½ cup brandy or cognac
  • 2 large Granny Smith apples, thinly sliced
  • 2 medium Honeycrisp apples, chopped
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds
  • 1 cup pomegranate arils (optional)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 star anise pod
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 tablespoon honey or agave nectar
  • Sparkling water or lemon-lime soda (for serving)
  • Fresh mint leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Wash the apples and oranges. Slice Granny Smith apples into thin wedges (keep skin on) and chop Honeycrisp apples into bite-sized chunks. Slice orange into rounds.
  2. In a large pitcher (at least 2 liters), pour in the white wine, apple cider, brandy, and honey. Stir gently to dissolve the honey.
  3. Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise, and whole cloves to the pitcher.
  4. Toss in the sliced apples, orange rounds, and pomegranate arils. Gently submerge the fruit in the liquid.
  5. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, ideally overnight, to allow flavors to infuse.
  6. Before serving, taste the sangria and adjust sweetness with more honey or tartness with lemon juice if needed.
  7. Just before serving, add sparkling water or lemon-lime soda to add fizz. Stir gently.
  8. Fill glasses with ice, ladle the sangria and fruit into glasses, and garnish with fresh mint leaves.

Notes

Do not use ground cinnamon as it makes the drink gritty and cloudy; use sticks instead. Choose firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp to prevent them from disintegrating. For a non-alcoholic version, substitute wine and brandy with extra apple cider and sparkling grape juice. The sangria tastes better after sitting overnight.
