A quick and easy miso butter sauce that adds rich umami flavor to roasted or steamed vegetables, transforming simple veggies into a savory delight.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (113 grams) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons (30 grams) white miso paste
  • 1 small clove garlic, finely minced or grated
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) soy sauce (low-sodium recommended)
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Optional: toasted sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  1. Soften the butter by leaving it out at room temperature for about 30 minutes until soft but not melted.
  2. Finely mince or grate the garlic for a finer texture.
  3. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the softened butter and white miso paste. Mix thoroughly with a spoon or small spatula until uniform in color, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic, fresh lemon juice, soy sauce, and black pepper until evenly distributed.
  5. Taste the mixture and adjust seasoning if needed by adding a pinch of sugar or extra butter for saltiness, or more lemon juice for tang.
  6. Use immediately by spreading on hot steamed or roasted vegetables, or refrigerate in an airtight container for up to one week. Let soften before serving if chilled.
  7. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds or chopped fresh herbs like chives or parsley before serving.

Notes

Use softened butter for best texture; adjust saltiness gradually due to miso and soy sauce salt content. For vegan version, substitute butter with plant-based margarine and use vegan-friendly miso paste. Miso butter can be stored refrigerated up to one week or frozen in small portions. Let soften before use for easy spreading.
