Spooky Halloween Sangria - featured image

A vibrant, tart, and deeply comforting red sangria featuring whole cranberries and oranges. This easy-to-make drink is perfect for Halloween parties or fall gatherings, offering a sophisticated twist on a classic with a spooky red hue.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750ml) Dry Red Wine (Pinot Noir or Merlot)
  • 1 cup Fresh or Frozen Cranberries
  • 2 Medium Oranges (juiced and sliced into rounds)
  • 1/2 cup Brandy or Orange Liqueur (e.g., Cointreau or Triple Sec)
  • 1/4 cup Simple Syrup or Honey
  • 1 cup Soda Water or Sparkling Wine (Prosecco)
  • Ice (lots of it)
  • Optional: 1-2 Cinnamon Sticks, 2 Star Anise pods, Thin slices of Granny Smith Apple

Instructions

  1. Wash the cranberries thoroughly and remove any stems or bad berries. Slice the oranges into thin rounds, removing any seeds.
  2. In a large glass pitcher, combine the red wine, brandy (or orange liqueur), and simple syrup. Stir well until the syrup is completely dissolved.
  3. Taste the wine mixture and adjust sweetness if necessary by adding more syrup or a splash of wine.
  4. Add the sliced oranges and whole cranberries to the wine mixture. Add optional spices like cinnamon sticks or star anise if using.
  5. Stir gently to combine, cover the pitcher, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally 4 to 6 hours, to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Just before serving, add a generous amount of ice to the pitcher.
  7. Pour in the soda water or sparkling wine and stir gently to preserve carbonation.
  8. Ladle the sangria into glasses, ensuring each serving includes liquid, cranberries, and orange slices. Garnish and serve immediately.

Notes

The ice will dilute the sangria slightly as it melts; consider using large ice cubes or an ice ring to minimize dilution. The fruit will continue to release flavor, making the drink stronger later in the evening. For a mocktail version, replace wine with cranberry and apple juice. Do not freeze sangria with fruit in it, as the fruit becomes inedible when thawed.
